Who This Is For

Hair that's working hard under a style.

Clients wearing or coming out of low-manipulation and protective styles. The hair is tucked away, but scalp and strand care still matter at every stage — the goal is healthy hair going in, staying healthy underneath, and coming out strong.

This page covers cosmetic styling-stage care: cleansing, moisture, and gentle handling. It is not treatment for scalp conditions, tension damage, or hair loss — those belong with a physician, dermatologist, or in-person professional assessment.

  • Braids, twists, and locs
  • Sew-ins, wigs, and extensions
  • Low-manipulation styling between looks
  • Pre-install, during-style, and takedown stages
  • Clients with dryness, scalp buildup, fragile ends, or tension-prone areas
What You're Solving

The style changes how you care, not whether you care.

Protective styles trap the everyday routine — buildup collects at the scalp, moisture struggles to reach the strand, and ends sit hidden until takedown reveals their condition. A style is only protective if the hair underneath is cared for. The work is keeping the scalp clean, the hair hydrated, and handling gentle at every stage.

  • Buildup at the scalp and root under long-worn styles
  • Dryness under the style and after takedown
  • Fragile, hidden ends that need protecting
  • Gentle takedown support to limit breakage
  • Moisture retention across the life of the style
  • Avoiding over-clarifying on hair that is already dry
  • Keeping care lightweight while the hair is installed
Chair-Side Protocol Focus

Care before, under, and after the style.

01
Before The Install
How To Use
  • Cleanse with Total Refresh pH Balancing Shampoo so the style goes on over a clean foundation
  • On buildup-prone scalps, reset with Pure Detox when appropriate
  • Make sure ends are moisturized and detangled before sectioning
A clean, hydrated, detangled starting point is what makes a style wear well for its full life.
02
Under The Style — Keep It Light
How To Use

During wear, focus on scalp cleanliness and keep everything lightweight: gentle cleansing as needed, and moisture that will not build up or weigh the style down. Avoid heavy oils and heavy products at the root.

Clean scalp, light moisture, no buildup — the style stays fresh and the hair stays healthy.
03
At Takedown — Hydrate & Detangle Gently
How To Use
  • After removing the style, flood the hair with moisture using AquaLush Peptide Hair Mask
  • Detangle slowly on damp, conditioned hair, working from the ends up
  • Never dry-rake hair that has been compressed in a style
Takedown is the fragile moment — moisture and patience protect the ends.
04
Rebalance & Seal
How To Use
  • Follow with Total Refresh pH Balancing Conditioner to restore slip and smooth the cuticle
  • Seal mid-lengths and ends with a few drops of Renew Porosity Balancing Oil
  • Keep the oil off the scalp
A protective style only protects if the hair underneath is cared for. The style is the easy part — the upkeep is the craft.

Retail / Send-Home Guidance

Coach the care between appointments.

Most of a protective style's life happens at home, so the client's scalp and moisture routine is what determines the condition at takedown.

  • Keep the scalp clean with gentle cleansing as needed — Total Refresh, or Pure Detox for genuine buildup, not constant clarifying
  • Light moisture under the style — never heavy oils at the root
  • AquaLush Peptide Hair Mask for a deep-moisture reset after takedown or before re-installing
  • Renew Porosity Balancing Oil, only a few drops on lengths and ends
  • Detangle gently on damp, conditioned hair, working from the ends upward
  • Book takedown before the style is worn too long or starts tangling at the roots
Pro Notes · When To Adjust

Match the care to the style and the scalp.

  • Match cleansing frequency to the style and the client's scalp — braids and locs need a workable scalp-cleansing rhythm, not a full strip every wash.
  • Keep oils off the scalp under a style; light moisture only, since heavy product at the root is what builds up and itches.
  • Takedown is the high-risk moment: saturate with moisture, work from the ends up, and never rush a dry detangle.
  • If lengths are breaking or over-processed at takedown, route to Damaged / Over-Processed Hair and add Atomic Hair Repair Leave-In on the compromised lengths.
  • Tension, pain, sores, severe or persistent flaking, raised bumps, or hair loss — especially at the hairline or edges — are not cosmetic issues. Refer the client to a physician or dermatologist or in-person professional assessment.
  • Do not imply Oli G addresses traction damage, alopecia, or any scalp disorder.
  • Set realistic wear-time expectations — overlong wear can contribute to buildup and breakage.
